Hero’s Wish – honouring our heroes and heroines

HERO’S WISH

We honour veterans and war widows with experiences that add to their treasured memories.

Two years ago, we had the amazing opportunity to take six veterans to the Centenary of ANZAC Dawn Service in Canberra. This trip came about when we discovered that a number of veterans at Vasey RSL Care Frankston South (RSL Park) had a desire to honour their fallen comrades. With financial support from the Frankston RSL, support from a number of organisations and a staff member to support each veteran, these six men experienced the very important 100th Anniversary of ANZAC. Joined by CEO, Janna Voloshin, they took part with over 100,000 people in the pre-dawn silence at Canberra’s Dawn Service. The veterans and staff are pictured right, outside the Canberra War Memorial.

Those who went were all very moved by the event.

“I wondered how we could continue to honour the wishes of our heroes and heroines – those who have served in the Australian and allied defence forces, and those left at home, suffering the loss of their spouse,” says Janna.

“‘Hero’s Wish’ is my way of giving ex-service members and war widows – living at our homes and ILUs or receiving Home Care – a chance to wish for something that is important or meaningful to them, something they may not otherwise be able to achieve.”

What can I wish for?

A Hero’s Wish can be for anything at all – it could be something big, medium, small. We cannot guarantee that all wishes will be fulfilled, but we will do our best to fulfill as many as we possibly can.

Wish Forms are being sent out to our community members this week.

For the first round of wishes, your Wish Form must be submitted no later than Wednesday 8 November and this can be done online (see link below), by post, or at our five homes using the Wish Boxes which will be arriving this week. (Note: aAfter this first round, there will be many other opportunities to submit wishes and we will keep our community informed about closing dates.

“We are committed to Serving Those Who Served, and Hero’s Wish is one way that we can do something special for the heroes and heroines who helped protect the safety and freedom we all enjoy here in Australia today,” says Janna.
