Remembrance and Our Responsibility: ANZAC Day Message from our CEO

* 24 April 2026 *

As we approach ANZAC Day, we pause to honour those who gave their lives in service to our country, those who made the ultimate sacrifice so that we can live in peace, safety and opportunity in the country we are proud to call home.

This year, I have been reflecting not only on remembrance, but on responsibility – our responsibility to the next generation of Australians.

Australia is a diverse nation. We come from many backgrounds, cultures and stories. Yet what unites us is far stronger than what sets us apart, such as our shared respect for those who served, our gratitude for their sacrifice and our commitment to the values they defended: courage, mateship, resilience and a fair go for all.

To preserve these values, we must ensure they are understood, felt and carried forward by younger Australians.

Recently, we had the privilege of seeing this in action. Children of our staff spent time with veterans, listening, asking questions, and hearing stories first-hand. These were were moments of connection across generations, moments where history became real, personal and deeply meaningful. Through simple yet powerful activities, such as drawing poppies and reflecting on what they represent, these children were able to express their understanding in their own way.

At Vasey RSL Care, we understand our responsibility to pass these stories on, not only through conversation, but through art, reflection and the creation of spaces that welcome younger generations. Initiatives such as the new memorial at Brighton East are designed to be accessible and inviting, providing a place where children can learn, connect and feel part of this important legacy.

It is through experiences like these that understanding grows. It is how respect is built. And it is how pride in our nation is passed on, moving it from something abstract, to something lived and shared.

Each of us has a role to play in ensuring that the spirit of ANZAC is kept alive over time. By continuing to tell these stories, by creating opportunities for connection and by encouraging curiosity and respect in younger generations, we can all help preserve the essence of who we are as a nation.

On this ANZAC Day, let us remember. Let us reflect. And let us recommit to passing this legacy forward, gently, proudly and together.

Lest we forget.

With sincere thanks to our staff and their children for allowing us to broadcast this video.
