27 October 2016: The annual Senior MasterChef Challenge took place this year at the Caulfield RSL Club, to the theme of ‘France’, commemorating one hundred years since the World War I Battle of the Somme on the Western Front.
Entries were of the usual high standard, and this year’s judges, Warrant Officer Class Two Darren Matthew (Army), Sergeant Brett Thomas (RAAF) and Petty Officer Michelle Collins (Navy) from the catering corps at HMAS Cerberus, had a difficult job to determine a winner.
RSL Park had carefully created an delightful apple tart in the shape of a rose
Vasey Brighton East had a new twist on the Croquenbouche
ANZAC Hostel designed a red white and blue cream and meringue delight, with blueberries, cream and strawberries representing the colours of the French flag
Vasey House used white chocolate to hold their profiteroles together to create an impressive mountain of dessert
Sir William Hall Hostel brought their own tea trolley to set their cake off and give it a little ‘je ne sais quoi’!
This was the sixth time that Vasey RSL Care has held the Senior MasterChef Annual Challenge and it was as fiercely fought as ever. Teams put a huge amount of effort into deciding on their entry, researching recipes, testing them and perfecting them for the Final, which was held during Veterans’ Health Week. Contestants and staff members dressed in the spirit of the day and gave presentations on the story behind their dishes.
Once the judges had heard from all the teams and completed their taste-testing, the competition entries were cut and handed around so that all present could to taste each one and decide their personal favourite.
CEO, Janna Voloshin, gave a summary of the judges’ comments, complimenting the skill of all the teams, before announcing that this year’s winner was Sir William Hall Hostel. Congratulations to the winners and to all teams who took part, and thank you to our expert judges from HMAS Cerberus.
