Since 1962, the Story Writing & Art Competition – generally known as ‘SWAC’ has been run annually in Victoria. The competition was set up to allow the veteran community to use their creativity and talent to promote health and lifestyle benefits – it us run by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs and the Austin Repatriation Hospital.
Each year since 1962, service personnel, veterans, war widows, spouses, children and grandchildren have submitted their works of art for the enjoyment of all those who go and see the display, and for the judges to assess.
Individuals and groups from Vasey RSL Care have entered on many occasions and won a number of prizes over the years. Last year, two prizes went to Keith Walsh from Cheltenham Independent Living Village for ‘Rising Sun’ and ‘The Complaints Department’, and Honourable Mentions went to the Creative Club at Vasey Brighton East for ‘Flanders Fields’ and to the Craft Group from Sir William Hall Hostel for ‘Forget-me-not’.
