Vasey RSL Care’s Senior MasterChef Challenge is a highlight on our annual calendar and this year’s event lived up to expectations.
The Wizard of OZ is a classic which hit the big screens in Australia in 1940, during World War II and at a time when hearts, brains and courage were greatly needed.
As we have come to expect, the residents and staff at our five residential homes put in an amazing effort with truly impressive results. Congratulations go to all the teams for their imagination, creativity, skills and hard work.
Presentations included residents speaking about their memories, the poppy field scene reminding them of Flanders Fields; a knitted yellow brick road and a short-bread yellow brick road; a whole variety of red shoes, poppies and hearts; and a room full of Dorothies, including our CEO, Janna Voloshin, Tin Men, Cowardly Lions, Scarecrows and one Wicked Witch of the west – GM Aged Care Services, Lee-Anne Suryn (who knew she had such a wicked laugh?)
And many Totos came along too, including a cute knitted one.
Residents from Vasey RSL Care Frankston South had the audience singing along to the Wizard of OZ, while Brighton resident David, a retired GP, got everyone out of their seats for some heart-health exercises.
Winners were the team from Bundoora, with their superb rainbow cake (complete with edible shoes!) and their highly entertaining presentation video.
Our connections with HMAS Cerberus are greatly valued, and Flight Sergeant Lance Rennie, Warrant Officer Class Two Patrick Kiely and Chief Petty Officer Pete Caban, all part of the catering corps, were our judges this year. They had clearly been training for our event by watching MasterChef on TV as they knew just how to keep us all in suspense.
“As with all enjoyable events, it is the culmination of a lot of work by a lot of people, so thank you to everyone involved in this year’s challenge,” said Janna Voloshin, CEO.
“This year, Bundoora took home the trophy with pride, but all the teams were champions. They all helped make this a genuine competition and they should all feel very proud of their achievements. It makes me feel very proud to experience the passion and enthusiasm that goes into our Senior MasterChef Challenge.”
