In honour of fallen comrades, Remembrance Day ceremonies took place at each of our Aged Care Homes, sadly without family and friends present this year.
Half of our residents are over ninety and many are over 100 – they have personal recollections of World War II and often still feel its impact on their families. A resident at Ivanhoe recently celebrated his 102nd birthday – he was born just before the end of World War I. These first-hand connections to these two historical events, which claimed so many lives, give poignancy to our residential services of commemoration. Many of our younger residents and a large proportion of our ex-service accommodation (ESA) residents served in later conflicts, from the Korean War onwards. We are honoured to support these men and women.
Camaraderie is one of our Promises to our community. Why? Because our community has told us that camaraderie is one of the most important aspects of their lives. Camaraderie develops in adversity – where reliance on each other can mean the difference between life and death.
On Remembrance Day we remember all those who served. We think of those who were changed forever by their service – physically injured, mentally scarred. And we remember those who did not return.
Lest we forget.
