This Sunday is the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended ‘The Great War’, bringing peace to the world after four years of bloody battle and the loss of an estimated 20 million lives. A further 21 million military personnel were wounded. Australia lost 62,000 men and 156,000 were wounded, gassed or taken prisoner: this from a population of less than five million.
We owe it to all those who served, suffered and died, to stop at 11am on Sunday, no matter what we are doing or where we are, to be silent for two minutes and remember their sacrifice.
Remembrance Day not only commemorates this important centenary, but also serves to commemorate those who have given their lives in all wars. Our own community here at Vasey RSL Care includes many men and women who served Australia or the allied forces in war and in peacekeeping forces, men and women who have been willing to risk their lives for our safety, peace and freedom. We care for many war widows who have lost their loved ones as a result of their service and many nurses who have spent their working lives caring for our sick and injured.
Our Promises of Traditional Values and Camaraderie make this day particularly significant for our community, whose members have lost family and friends, and for whom, this day brings a great mixture of feelings. Some may choose to be around their loved ones, while others may prefer to be alone with their own memories and reflections.
As we mark 100 years since the end of World War I, let us observe two minutes’ silence at 11am, remembering with gratitude the sacrifices made by those who died fighting for the values they believed in and giving us the freedom we enjoy today.
