On 28 May this year, 126 Vasey RSL Care employees embarked on the 100 Day Journey as part of the Global Corporate Challenge (GCC), a 12 month challenge designed to boost employee health and foster teamwork.
Our winners, The Poppies, show off their first place certificates. (from left to right: Bishwa Sharma, Marcia Perry, Glennys McKay, Amanda Verley, Shrijana Bashyal, Ronnie Alegre and (not in photo) Linda Brownfield.
From the start of the 100 Day Journey to its conclusion on 4 September, our staff walked, ran, biked and swam more than 197 million steps together – the equivalent of having travelled around the world three times!
One of the exciting improvements our participants made over the 100 Day Journey was the number of steps they took each day. Before the challenge began, just 19% of staff who joined the GCC reported taking more than the 10,000 steps per day recommended for good health. At the conclusion of the 100 days, 84% of participants were taking more than 10,000 steps per day, with a daily organisational average of 16,319 steps. This impressive average is the same as each person walking from our Vasey Brighton East site in Brighton East to our Central Office in Hawthorn every day!
The competition sparked some friendly team rivalry in workplaces as teams moved up and down the leader board over the 100 days. In a field of more than 285,000 participants worldwide participating in more than 40,000 teams, Vasey RSL Care’s most active team The Poppies from ANZAC Hostel (pictured), captained by Ronnie Alegre, placed at a respectable 413th on the international leader board.
Within Vasey RSL Care, our winners The Poppies were closely followed by our second place team, Salute to Achievers, from Vasey Brighton East and our third place team, The Fun Factory, from RSL Park.
Feedback from Vasey RSL Care staff about their GCC experience has been very positive, with participants reporting that they are now a lot more conscious of their daily activity levels and have an increased awareness of healthy lifestyle habits. Staff will participate in the next stage of the GCC in December this year in an individual challenge to boost activity over the holiday season.
