What is ‘My Health Record’?

It is a safe online store of our own personal health information, maintained by Government.

Who can access it?

The contents of our ‘My Health Record’ are accessible to the individual themselves (or their Authorised Representative if applicable) and to authorised medical practitioners, such as GPs, emergency department staff, clinical aged care staff and specialist practitioners. You have control over who can see your information.

What does My Health Record contain?

It can contain a wide range of health information including medical history, current medicines, allergies, immunisations, test results and hospital discharge information. Pathology and diagnostic imaging reports are now required to be uploaded to My Health Record by default and My Aged Care support plans can be shared in My Health Record.

What are the benefits of My Health Record?

Having health records in one place, accessible to those who need them, means we don’t have to repeat our medical history to different people, our important information doesn’t get mislaid or forgotten, and the people looking after our health have the best possible data to inform their decision-making.

In the case of a medical emergency, access to our My Health Record could even be life-saving.

How do I know if I have a My Health Record?

Every Australian who has EITHER a Medicare card OR a DVA Gold, White or Orange Card, will automatically have a My Health Record, UNLESS they have previously opted out. If you have opted out previously, you can register again.

Important: for this to work for you, your My Health Record must be linked to your MyGov account.

Check that:

  1. 1. You have a MyGov account set up, AND
  2. 2. Your MyGov account is linked to your My Health Record.

How do I check if I have a MyGov account?

Go to https://my.gov.au and try ‘signing in’ to find out if you already have a MyGov account. It will lead you through it, assisting if you have forgotten your username, password or both. If you don’t have a MyGov account, you can set one up here.

How do I link my MyGov account to my My Health Record?

  1. 1. Log in to your MyGov account (as above).
  2. 2. Click ‘View and link services’ as shown below.
  3. 3. A list of services you can link to will be shown: choose ‘My Health Record’ and follow the prompts.

Note: If you have previously opted out of My Health Record, you can register for a new one.

Do I have to share all my health information?

You can control your account, such as controlling which healthcare provider organisations can see information in your record.

Value for Aged Care

This system is particularly helpful in aged care and we encourage our residents to ensure their details are accessible.

However, please be aware that our staff are not permitted to check the personal details of residents in MyGov or My Health Record or to change them. If the resident needs assistance, family members or friends are encouraged to assist. If need be, the resident may appoint an ‘Authorised Representative’ to look after their My Health Record.
