We offer services and accommodation that prioritise those who have played a significant role in Australia’s past through their service in the Australian or allied forces.
Resident care and quality of life are the foundation of all we do.
We are proud to have a highly skilled, competent workforce to deliver services of consistently high quality, with confidence and kindness.
Vasey RSL Care attracts high quality staff. Each staff member is valued for their unique contribution to our community and we have an environment that is supportive, friendly and welcoming to all.
As indicated by our Staff Survey, he top three reasons staff like working here are:
The survey also indicate that our staff felt highly engaged with our organisation and care about our community members and the lives they are living.
Supporting ex-service men and women (veterans) is at the core of the work we do and Vasey RSL Care carries this mission into its employment practices as well.
Vasey RSL Care has signed the Veterans’ Employment Commitment to demonstrate our support for employing ex-service men and women.
We have also joined forces with other veteran-focused care providers in other states to encourage introduction of ex-service staff or defence partners in instances where staff move interstate or move here from another state.
Among our 500+ employees, we have veterans in a range of roles across all areas.
These staff bring their lived experience and knowledge to their roles and to other team members, helping broaden our organisation’s understanding of what it means to serve and what that might mean for those in our care.
General Manager – Veteran Services, Chris Gray
Chris has been with Vasey RSL Care for over six years, firstly in the Property Services Team and since early 2021 as GM – Veteran Services. Chris served in the Australian Army for 17 years, managing construction projects and providing humanitarian aid in Australia and on six overseas tours of duty. He remained in the Army Reserves for a further ten years, until 2018.
“At Vasey RSL Care we provide services and accommodation that prioritise veterans and war widows. While it is not essential that all our staff are veterans themselves, our experience shows that it is really helpful for some roles.
“There’s been times when I’ve been chatting to some of our residents, not exactly sure what it is, something from our training or our past experiences which makes it easy to connect and it provides a good basis for building trust and respect.
“Vasey RSL Care is a very supportive work environment that ‘Serves Those Who Served’ – it gives me a lot of job satisfaction working here and seeing that the organisation honours and respects veterans of all ages – whether it’s younger veterans coming into our ex-service accommodation, or older veterans needing home care or residential care. For me, it’s also an opportunity to use the skills I gained in the Army and put them to good use.
“If you’re a veteran and looking for rewarding employment, this is a great place to work – I recommend it.”
Meet some of our other staff members who are ADF veterans:
Wayne worked as Team Leader Enrolled Nurse at Vasey RSL Care Bundoora (aged care home) and previously worked at our Frankston South home.
Wayne tells us:
“I have achieved a feeling of continued service to my community through caring for fellow veterans and their families. I love the interactions I am able to have with the older veterans and the different stories that we can share about our time in the forces,”
Anne is Veteran Support Coordinator in the Veteran Services Team: she supports residents in our ex-service units at 8 locations across the metropolitan Melbourne and Geelong region. She says:
“My previous service in the Army gives me a level of insight and understanding that is critical in a support role with veterans.”
Neville served in the Royal Australian Navy from 1967 to 1974. His postings included HMAS Cerberus and sea-going deployments on Stalwart, destroyers Duchess and Swan, secondments to the submarine Ovens and HM Yacht Britannia and finally on the staff of the Royal Australian Naval College (RANC) HMAS Creswell at Jervis Bay.
He has many fond memories of his service in various roles including at RANC and as a Ship’s diver, and of the fine people that he served with including enduring friendships going back as far as 1972.
Neville has a strong affinity with Vasey RSL Care and the veterans that it serves and in his role as Project Manager is driven by a desire to improve the organisation’s accommodation facilities for his fellow veterans and their families to the best attainable standard.
“To me this is a dream job, doing what I do best for those that mean so much to me and our country for their service. It is wonderful to have arrived at the organisation at a time when the new V Centre is to be built at Ivanhoe as a transitional facility for veterans, including some of our younger ones, and to assist them to find their way back into society. The work here never finishes”.
We are actively working to employ veterans in roles across our organisation.
If you are a veteran or know a veteran who is looking for a role that will enable them to use their specific experience, please encourage them to reach out to us at recruitment@vaseyrslcare.org.au.
